Transgender Film - Eva Robins in 'Mascara' (1987)

Eva Robins Transgendered Actress & Her Film Mascara

Transgender celebrities are much more common place in todays world. If we go back to the 1980s a transgendered actor was very uncommon. We had many films which contained transgendered themes but many of the characters were played by CIS born actors.
Eva Robins
A scene from Tenebrae with Eva Robins

I first became aware of the actress Eva Robins when I saw the film Mascara (1987) in which she stars with Michael Sarrazine and Charlotte Rampling. Eva by this time was already an established star appearing on many Italian talk shows. Her fame is very much centred around her own country, Italy and most of her work is in Italian language. Unless you were a horror fan in the 1980's you would have missed her perhaps most iconic dream like appearance in Dario Argento's Tenebrae, in a white dress and red high heels.

Eva was born male in 1958, but developed naturally feminine features and breasts during puberty, despite being a normal boy growing up, her body failed to masculine like the other boys of her age. From the age of about thirteen she says she felt she wanted to be a female. When she was sixteen, she started oestrogen treatments. By the age of twenty-one she was living completely as a woman.

Trans Bizarre  'Mascara' 1987
Mascara, the bizarre trans exploitation 'Eurotrash' movie. Eva plays the part of a beautiful 'shemale' who performs at a secret night club, at the end of a pier, and through a secret underground tunnel. A private tranny club, where transgender performers mime to operatic pieces or take part in S&M rituals back stage. This club caters to weathly customers with bizarre tastes.

The basic story from the back of the VHS box : An aria of violence grips the heart of the opera world! And terror strikes the twilight existence of the transvestite! Investigating an apparent suicude, police inspector Sanders is visited by an attractive and convincing member of the transvestite community. Lana informs him that the suicude was actually murder and a warped maniac is engulfing her friends' subterranean lifestyle in a dark web of decadence, blackmail and sleazy corruption.

A spectacular ball gown, borrowed from the opera's costume designer, holds the clue to the identity of the killer. But Mascara can hide a multitude of twisted sins....

Pepper wears the dress and mimes to an operatic piece.

Sadly the film is only available on VHS on the second hand markets, so if you want a copy check eBay.

Crossdreaming Boy to Girl "My Life in Pink" - Ma Vie en Rose

"Ludovic is a transgender girl who is coming out", reads one of the reviews for the 1997 French film Ma Vie en Rose (My Life in Pink).  This is a movie which addresses gender and transgender issues through the eyes of a young boy called Ludovic.
Young Ludovic during a cross dreaming moment
Young Ludo thinks nothing of dressing up in his sister's clothes and presenting himself at his parents house warming party in front of all their new neighbours.  This results in a number of sidelong glances and gossip towards Ludo and the rest of his family.  Ludo's innocence of the adult world allows him to express himself naturally until the external pressure becomes too much and he is told to suppress these feelings.

Ludovic (left) with his shamed family

The film is a heart warming story, if you're trans yourself you'll become quite emotional during some of the scenes. My only criticism is that the reactions of characters in Ludo's life is a little overdone.  A boy dressing up in girls clothes would not result in the family losing their income, home and being shamed by everyone around them.  However this is a story about peoples prejudice and you have to add something like this otherwise there would be no story, so I forgive the script writer.

Ludovico with his Granny and Mother

One of the important characters is Ludo's grandmother, who recognises the young boy's girlish manner.  There is a great scene when young Ludo dances in an effeminate manner which is clearly noticed by granny, so as not to embarrass him she joins in.  Granny had not seen Ludo in some time and she comments to him about how much he has changed. Ludo's granny is the only character who accepts Ludo for what he is.

Young Ludo Dancing With Granny

Ludo's mother becomes desperate to put a stop to his girlish ways, as she thinks that her son is a threat to their social existence in their middle class community. The scene where his mum forces him to have his hair cut will bring tears to your eyes.

There are a number of cross dreaming fantasy sequences where Ludo is transported into fairy tale fantasy world where he is dressed as a girl with his fantasy female friend, from his favourite television programme.

Ludo During a Crossdreaming Moment

Ludo confesses he will marry his best male friend at school, who also happens to be the son of the boss of Ludo's father. As a result of this his father looses his job and they have to move away from the respectable middle class area. Moving to a new house in a poorer area Ludo is reminded that it's his fault that they had to move, and that he must put a stop to any girly expression once and for all.

Whilst out playing in his new neighbourhood Ludo makes a new male friend, at least Ludo thinks he is a boy until it's revealed that he is actually a female tomboy.  They become good friends but make the mistake of swapping clothes at the tomboy's party. I won't say how it ends as I'm trying to encourage you to watch the full movie yourself. This really is a great movie The film is easy to obtain on DVD from most outlets and is well worth the money. Crossdressing Identity Switch : The Tenant

Crossdressing Film : The Tenant (Roman Polanski)

Some of you reading this may at some stage have fantasised about some kind of forced sexchange at the hands of others without your consent. Just imagine you're a vulnerable young man suffering from some form of delusion of reality and you realise that your neighbours in your apartment block are doing just that - changing your sexual identity into that of a female.
Watching the neighbours. Careful they may change your sex.
The Tenant is not technically a transgender film, but it does cover forced crossdressing and the study of a young male who is perhaps suffering from paranoia or schizophrenia. The film is a faithful adaptation on the book by Roland Topor of the same name.
Why are you wearing make-up? Have you
turned into a woman?
Set in an apartment block in Paris Monsieur Trelkovsky (played by director Polanski) moves into a new apartment.  The previous tenant, a young female, had attempted suicide by jumping from a window and is in the local hospital covered from head to toe in bandages from the failed attempt.  M. Trelkovsky acquired the new apartment together with the belongings of the previous tenant, and yes her clothes too.

Crossdressed as the previous tenant,
M. Trelkosky's gender identity is at risk
M. Trelkovsky is very curious about the previous tenant and even visits her in hospital, but she is unable to talk, only scream. M. Trelkovsky meets and becomes in evolved with the previous tenant's friends, whilst at the same time falling out with his new neighbours over the noise he is making late
at night.

M. Trelkovsky soon assumes the full sexual identity of the
previous female tenant.
Gradually he starts to assume the identity of the previous female tenant, even though he is not fully aware he is doing this. One day he wakes up to find he is wearing nail polish and lipstick. He is shocked and due to his mental condition starts to believe his neighbours are trying to turn him into the previous female tenant so as he can then enact her suicide again. What follows is a paranoid journey of fear as our character fears for the survival of his own identity.

Shelly Winters and Roman Polanski discuss the suicide
attempt by the previous tenant.

I really loved this film, but do accept that this is not a movie for everyone. I even found some of its scenes genuinely frightening.

Come back to your apartment we haven't finished
your sex change

The film can be easily obtained on DVD, although I would welcome a blu ray transfer. Here are a couple of trailers which don't give too much away.

Trans Film : 'Laurence Anyways' Revisited

Going through my DVD collection I my found a copy of the transgender film Laurence Anyways.
I had forgotten what a masterpiece Laurence Anyways is. This is one of my true favourites of trans cinema but it's probably not for everyone. It's very long at 159 minutes and it was filmed in 4:3 which makes it a little awkward with todays modern 16:9 widescreen world. The 4:3 filming ratio was chosen to give it a more 1980's look, which for me is the only fault with the film.

Laurence Anyways studies Laurence and his partners relationship across many years, and the focus I feel is through the partners eyes. The film is non trans traditional, Laurence on the surface appears to be a masculine male and when crossdressed he uses is own very short hair with no wig for many early sequences.

There are many abstract dream like moments within the film, which may annoy some viewers. However for me the whole trans experience is rather dream like in itself. Fact and fantasy often blur and you can't see the wood from the trees. So when a film like this uses some rather dreamy imagery I rather welcomed it.

Here is one sequence of the film which takes a short break from the story presenting a music video of Laurence's partner having a night out and being rather tempted by the attentions of a good looking man.

And finally the trailer and plot synopsis via Amazon where you can buy the DVD:

Multi-awarding 23-year-old filmmaker Xavier Dolan writes and directs his most ambitious feature to date LAURENCE ANYWAYS, the epic love story of a man (Melvil Poupaud) who decides to undergo a sex change and the dramatic effect it has on his relationship with his girlfriend (Suzanne Clément). Thought-provoking and stylishly shot the film dazzles, featuring music from Fever Ray, The Cure, Duran Duran, Visage, Depeche Mode and Scottish composer Craig Armstrong.
